$25,000 in ERCA Community Contribution Scholarships

Kathleen Russell from Pawling Jr./Sr. High School, Pawling, New York

When a classmate was seriously injured in an automobile accident, Kathleen organized a celebrity auction to help pay for medical expenses. Kathleen oversaw the writing of more than 700 letters requesting donations and was able to gather items from over 100 celebrities. The auction became a major community event and raised $12,000.

Kathleen has also developed and presented her own workshops in the area of substance abuse prevention to other schools in her community.

Kathleen now attends SUNY in Cortland, NY.



Athena Samerotte from Dallas High School, Dallas, Oregon

As part of her Global Studies class, Athena learned about the state of Rwanda in the aftermath of the genocide and the ongoing civil strife. She was moved by the lack of medical services in Rwanda, especially about the lack of sanitary medical facilities for pregnant women. Athena organized her classmates and made presentations to classes in her high school explaining the situation and soliciting help and donations. The money collected was sent to the International Rescue Committee to purchase 61 birthing kits for the women of Rwanda. Athena now attends Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.



Douglas B. Schulze from Fort Loramie High School, Fort Loramie, Ohio

The Youth Building in the village of Fort Loramie was in desperate need of repair. The paint was peeling off of the wood siding, windows did not have any trim and light fixtures were cracked and broken. Seeing this need, Doug Schultze, in consultation with the village council, organized 21 volunteers to refurbish the building, which is now used by several community and youth organizations including 4-H Club, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and Fort Loramie Elementary Odyssey of the Mind Program.

In addition to his community service work, Doug is a Drug Resistance Education Role Model at his high school and is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students.

Doug will attend Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.



Ekta Shah from Southeast High School, Bradenton, Florida

Ekta has spent most of her spare time involved in community service through her high school Key Club organization. She is a library volunteer, Meals-On-Wheels summer assistant, and participates in a variety of activities as a member of the Key Club. Known for her innovative methods of raising funds for various charities, Ekta also tutors students from her high school who are learning English as a second language.

Ekta will attend the University of South Florida in Tampa , Florida.



Adam Stacey from Brunswick High School, Brunswick, Ohio

Adam organized a team called "Adopt-A-Yard" which helps elderly residents of his community with seasonal chores such as raking leaves, shoveling snow and cutting grass. He is a group leader with Volunteer Opportunities for Teens, which concentrates on raising money and providing for those with special needs in the Brunswick, Ohio area. As Student Council President, he helped organize volunteer shifts to assist with the school's annual blood drive. Through his efforts, Brunswick High School leads the county with more donors than any other high school.

Adam attends the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.
