$25,000 in ERCA Community Contribution Scholarships

Daniel Eeten, Hartsburg-Emden High School,Hartsburg, Illinois

Daniel has been volunteering at the Hartsburg Fire Department since he was twelve years old. He was instrumental in fundraising efforts that helped purchase a defibrillator for the department. He has worked with the children of the community, teaching them about fire safety. He helped to organize a Patriotism and Remembrance Ceremony that honored the victims of the September 11th tragedy and he helped coordinate a benefit for a local fireman which raised nearly $3,000 to help the family pay for medical expenses associated with cancer treatment.

Daniel will attend Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois this fall. He intends to remain with the Hartsburg Fire Department while he is in college.



John Griffey III, Walker Valley High School, Cleveland, Tennessee

John planned and implemented a project to landscape his local elementary school. He designed the landscape project, obtained donations from local businesses and organized a team of volunteers to help him install the landscaping.

John will attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah this fall.



Magalie Jean-Noel, Miami Senior High, Miami, Florida

Throughout high school, Magalie volunteered as an attorney in Miami-Dade County Teen Court. In working with teen lawbreakers, Magalie's mission is to help interrupt beginning criminal behavior in the juvenile offender and to instill the value of accountability to peers, family and the community. Instead of jail time and fines, Teen Court mandates alternative sanctions including counseling, curfews, tutoring and written essays. Magalie helps to turn first-time offenders into last-time offenders.

She will attend Florida State University this fall.



Dennis Huynh, James Monroe High School, North Hills, CA

For the last three years, Dennis has volunteered at a local retirement home. In addition to spending every Saturday afternoon visiting the residents, he has organized other students to join him. With the additional volunteers, Dennis created a monthly "games" day in which an average of eighteen teenagers helped to entertain the residents.

Dennis will attend The University of California at Berkeley in the fall.



Kevin Kaufman, Conemaugh Township Area High School, Davidsville, PA

Kevin recruited and organized a crew of fourteen men and boys to paint Scalp Level Trinity Church. He measured each of the five classrooms and the pastor's study, calculated the amount of paint needed, gathered all the necessary supplies and participated in and supervised the actual painting.

Kevin will attend Penn State University in the fall.
