Clint Holland, Waltrip Senior High School, Houston, Texas
Clint found a way to help make new, younger residents of his previously older and retired neighborhood feel welcome, at home and involved in the existing Civic Club. Focusing on holiday programs, he raised money for prizes and organized family events such as "dinner with Santa" and Easter egg hunts. He helped to publicize these events by delivering over 1000 newsletters and making signs. In addition, he mows the lawns of elderly community residents, and helped residents get through the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Allison in 2001.

In addition, he helped the hospital with other public outreach events, including "Winter Contribution" and "Public Health Checkup."

Gypsie MacSweeney, Central High School, Brooksville, Florida
Gypsie began her volunteer project when she was in 6th grade. Since that time, she has spent more than 1,000 hours returning to her former kindergarten class three times a week to help the teacher with paperwork. Over the course of 7 years, she developed learning activities to help the children love reading and improve their basic skills. She chose books to read to the class every afternoon and set up small projects to go with the books, preparing all of the supplies on her own. As a senior, she helped to mentor a new volunteer so that her project will continue after Gypsie's graduation.
This fall, Gypsie will attend The University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, when she hopes to study education.

Adam McCabe, Ione High School, Ione, Oregon
Ione, Oregon is a small, rural town that does not have many organized activities for young children. Adam had already done his "fair share" for the community by mowing yards for the elderly, helping at the County Fair, driving over 350 miles roundtrip to serve food for the homeless and clean rooms for the mentally and physically challenged people of downtown Portland, and assisting with many other fund-raising drives. He knew, though, that if he didn't step in to help coach "Pee Wee Basketball," the children in grades Kindergarten to 5 would not have the chance to participate in an organized sport during the winter months. As a volunteer coach, he had to practice at least twice a week, organizing over 30 youth and their parents and teaching the fundamentals of basketball. When he wasn't playing varsity basketball himself, Adam shepherded the Pee Wee team from locker room to game to locker room to home on game days.
Adam will attend the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho this fall.

Nancy Nguyen, Lincoln Northeast High School, Lincoln, Nebraska
Nancy has lived in America for nine years, during which time she has learned English and has become an American. When she was 16, she realized that many Vietnamese youths who have lived in the United States all their lives, no longer know the Vietnamese language or important parts of their cultural heritage. She volunteered her Saturdays for two years throughout the school year teaching a children's class on Vietnamese language and culture.
This fall, Nancy will attend the University of Lincoln in Lincoln, Nebraska.
