Jean Rogers, Myers Park High School, Charlotte, North Carolina

As a senior in high school, Jean initiated a mentoring project for a freshman that she met while assisting a classroom teacher. She realized that this student had athletic talent, but lacked the social skills she needed to succeed academically and socially. Working through the classroom teacher, Jean met with the freshman daily, taking care to offer motivational rewards and opportunities. Jean intends to continue working with this student after her graduation. In addition, Jean has given hours of her time to many different projects such as reading for the blind, bone marrow drives, helping hurricane victims and helping at an Alzheimer's Day Care program.

This fall, Jean will attend Howard University in Washington, D.C.



Thomas Shoultz, Daphne High School, Daphne, Alabama

Tom proposed, organized and took part in a fundraiser to benefit a family whose home burned down. Approximately 250 students and teachers in Tom's school contributed to the project, which helped the family to buy food and replace essential household items. Tom will be a high school senior this fall.



Jennifer Sutton, Warren High School, Downey, California

Working through her local Rotary organization, Jennifer has planned and/or participated in the Downey Street Faire, Keep Downey Beautiful, ARC Walk for Independence, ARC Fishing Day, and Beach Cleanup. She is a volunteer YMCA gymnastics coach and volunteers in her school as a math and science tutor. In addition, Jennifer volunteered as a research assistant in the USC Edmondson Fellowship Program for cancer research.
As part of a team of volunteer students, she contributed over 300 hours to cancer research.

Jennifer will attend the University of California at Los Angeles this fall.



Christopher Thompson, Central High School, Milton, Florida

In response to the tragedy of September 11th, Christopher spearheaded a drive to benefit the Red Cross. He set up donation stations, advertised and made posters, contacted the local Red Cross, and ultimately raised over $1,800 from a small rural school with an enrollment of just over 300 students.

Chris will attend the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida this fall.



LynAnn Weaver, Burlington High School, Burlington, Colorado

LynAnn volunteers with Youth Volunteer Corps. She has taken part in re-painting a local park, planting a "butterfly garden" at a rest home, helping the elderly with yard work, highway clean-ups, free babysitting so that parents can attend community meetings, collections for the needy and staffing a weekend youth center. In addition, she volunteered in the summer at the Kit Carson County Court House.

LynAnn will be a junior in high school this fall.
